Social media is full of shocking headlines, virus warnings and chain messages. Most of them are 'click-bait', or just plain time-wasters. Those 'money for nothing' and heartwarming 'share this story' posts, which keep appearing in your timeline, are almost certainly hoaxes. Some 'news stories' have a more sinister origin, with some being traced back to agencies in parts of the world, where regimes and governments have an interest in spreading false news and even trying to influence democratic political processes. Check them out on one of these sites before circulating to your friends & colleagues.

Urban Legends A US website, specialising in checking and reporting on urban legends. Although many of the topics it covers are aimed at a US audience, much of its content is relevant around the wider world and on the Internet in particular. Now part of LiveAbout.com, Urban Legends is not as serious as it once was, but still contains many classic urban legends, which have a habit of resurfacing with annoying regularity.
